01
The ancient Celtic ritual of binding the couple’s hands together with ribbon, tartan, or rope.
Symbolizes the joining of lives — it’s actually where the phrase “tying the knot” comes from.
02
A Quaich is a shallow two-handled drinking cup used to share whisky.
The couple drinks from it as a symbol of trust, unity, and the shared journey ahead.
03
Bagpipes are often played as the bride arrives or the couple leaves the ceremony.
Grooms and guests commonly wear kilts in their family tartan, complete with sporran, sgian dubh (small knife), and kilt hose.
04
In some rural traditions, the bride’s (or both the couple’s) feet are washed by an older married woman, symbolizing purification and readiness for marriage. Perfect for a shoreline venue!
05
After the ceremony, the groom’s family may present the bride with a piece of their clan tartan — often pinned to her dress or sash.
Symbolizes her welcome into the clan.
06
As the bride arrives or leaves, the father of the bride throws coins to children (often outside the church or venue).
It’s a symbol of prosperity and generosity, and also a fun, chaotic little tradition!
The Speirin' (Asking Permission)
Traditionally, the groom would “speir” (ask) for the bride’s hand from her father — often over a dram of whisky.
Creeling the Groom (Highland tradition)
Friends fill a large basket (creel) with rocks and strap it to the groom’s back.
He must carry it until his bride agrees to kiss him — then he's “freed” from his burden.
